How to Eliminate Stress When Moving House

Whether you are moving to a new home just down the street, or across the country, it can be a very exciting time in your life. However, it can also be extremely stressful, due to the amount of work which has to be done in a short period, on top of numerous little things which you need to remember.

In addition to this, you also have to worry about cleaning your home before putting the house on the market, or returning the keys to the real estate agent once the lease has concluded.

With so much to do, it can be overwhelming, but once you’ve got everything organised and prepared ahead of time, it can be a lot easier than expected.

Here are some tips to help eliminate stress when moving house:

1. Make a Checklist

Planning in advance allows you to keep everything organised and will ensure your cleaning and packing goes off without a hitch, while no last-minute problems occur.

Besides your moving date, create deadlines for certain tasks such as emptying out the refrigerator, and what dates to pack certain rooms. Doing this allows you to get as much of the move-out cleaning completed ahead of time, while still having access to necessities during the process.

2. Pack Everything First

Wait until everything has been packed and finalised before you even begin trying to clean. Otherwise, you will find yourself going in circles, and have to clean again after the final packing has been done. Also, it will make it easier and faster to clean without knick-knacks scattered everywhere and all over the floor slowing you down.

Completely pack one room at a time before moving onto the next one. The idea is to start with the rooms with the items you use the least.

3. Store All Packed Boxes In One Room

If it’s not possible to move packed boxes to your new place as you go along, then collect all the boxes and place them in a separate room, piled up in a corner. This keeps all the packed items out of the way, allowing you to clean the rest of the house easier. Once you’ve moved everything, then you can give this room a final clean.

4. Downsize, Downsize, Downsize

While this step may not be for everyone, it is the perfect chance to get rid of anything you no longer want or need, so that you don’t have to bring it with you to your new home. You’ll already be going through and packing and cleaning everything you own, so it’s the perfect time to do so.

Scatter a few empty boxes throughout your house, and any items you haven’t used in months, or clothes you forgot you had before you emptied your closet, place into one of these boxes.

Once you have rounded up everything, you can either sell the items on eBay, Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace for some extra money or donate them to a charity.

5. Call in a Favour

Packing can be an overwhelming task to tackle on your own. However, if you have some help it will make it a lot easier, with extra hands and good company. It’s time to ask your friends and family to volunteer their time. In exchange, offer to buy some pizza and a few beverages!

While you may be able to tackle a lot of the packing yourself, the assistance of your helpers can have a huge difference in getting everything done, and eliminate stress.
